Touching the Void

A friend of mine suggested I rent "Touching the Void". I'd never heard of it and had no idea what it was about, but on his recommendation, I sat down to watch it.

The movie is based on a book written by Joe Simpson. The book is based on the actual events Simpson and Simon Yates experienced while climbing a mountain wall in the Andes Mountains that had never been successfully climbed.

It's a different style "true story" then what I was expecting. Throughout the movie, there are actors portraying the climbers, while the actual climbers narrate the story.

The camera work in the movie is amazing. In one scene, the camera takes you in on an intense grimace of a climber's face as he's trying to reach just a little bit higher, and in the next, the camera has panned out to make the climbers seem like tiny little specks on a huge snow covered canvas. It was definitely a way to give people like me, who really have no idea how huge these mountains are, an idea of what these climbers were up against.

As far as documentaries go, this one sucked me in and I wasn't going anywhere until the credits started rolling.
