The Boys of Baraka

My same friend that suggested I watch Touching the Void, also suggested I check out The Boys of Baraka. The Boys of Baraka are several 12 and 13 year old boys that come from a crime-ridden neighborhood in Baltimore. They volunteer to spend three years in a Kenyan boarding school and this documentary covers the first year.

Each of the four boys the documentary focuses primarily on has his own personality and his own reasons for volunteering for this experimental opportunity. The folks behind the camera do just what they need to do in order to make movie-watchers become attached to each boy.

Upon first arriving in Kenya, each of the boys immediately become homesick and have a hard time adjusting to the strict rules and regulations they're presented with on a daily basis. By the end of their first school year, though, they've all changed into mature young men, ready to learn and excited about preparing themselves for their futures.

Through each boys' eyes and they way the approach things, it's easy for people to watch this movie to become emotionally attached. It's a good movie that pulls at the heart strings. These kids are put into a position to improve their lives and remove themselves from a potentially horrible situation; watching them is inspiring.
