Sin City

First and foremost, I must make sure that parents understand that this is NOT a kids movie. It is rated R. I didn't even think it was until about fifteen minutes into the movie. With that said, lets get on with the review.

This is probably the best comic-book to movie I have ever seen. Now I am not as familiar with the Sin City line of comic novels written by Frank Miller. He had a serious role in this movie as he wrote and directed this movie so you know it would be a dead ringer.

The movie is really three short movies all spliced together ala Pulp Fiction. The only similarity that runs through it is the fact that it all takes place in Sin City. Sin City is the worst city environment imaginable times a hundred. Good cops are in the minority, prostitutes run an entire area, heads of the church are more powerful than anyone else in the city and the political offices are all corrupt.

So the first story we get a taste of centers around Bruce Willis character Hartigan. He is a legit cop who blows off a bad guys arm along with other things. Turns out, this bad guy is the son of a very powerful person and Hartigan is framed for raping this little girl who he saved. The story continues from there and I cannot talk more about it without giving away anything.

The next story is by far the best. It features Mickey Rourke as Marv who looks like the Thing from the Fantastic Four had mated with Frankenstein and the baby was dropped… 1000 times. Because of his looks he has never gotten any attention from the females. So he is given the pleasure of being with a female and then she is killed and he is framed for her murder. He sets out on a massive rampage to find out who set him up and of course kill them. Mickey Rourke did an amazing job with this role and I almost wish the entire movie was based on this sub plot.

Finally we are treated to Clive Owen as Dwight who of course has a shady past is involved with the prostitutes mentioned above. A cop get killed and all hell is about to break loose with the area the prostitutes control. Of course he helps keep the peace, well helps keep the prostitutes keep their control over the territory.

This movie is filled with amazing actors, which really boggled my mind. I couldn't believe how many well known actors signed up for this. The movie is almost completely in black and white with some color here and there. After only seeing the movie one time I am not sure how the color plays in this movie, but it reminded me of old comics where color was sparse. The second best character, for me at least, was played by Elija Wood. He was creepy as hell and never even spoke one word. Its amazing to see him go from Frodo to this as it really shows he can be more than a hobbit.

All in all I loved this movie and plan on seeing it at least one more time in the theater. When it hits the DVD scene you can bet I will own this one. I also can't wait for the DVD so I can hear all the audio commentaries you know will be accompanying it. This was a great movie and I suggest you go see it. It will probably be over shadowed by other blockbuster hits this year such as Star Wars, Fantastic Four, and of course Harry Potter, but it is definitely one to watch.
