I must admit that I am a sucker for a good animated movie. Especially now that there are companies like Pixar and Dreamworks who can produce such amazing animation. The only hard part with animation is actually telling a good story that both children and adults will enjoy. Thankfully Shark Tale has a great story.
The movie starts off with a fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith) who is at the bottom of the food chain. He dreams of being at the top of the reef (aka a celebrity) and would do anything to get there. He has numerous "get rich quick" ideas that he pitches to his boss, Sykes, to get an advance on his salary and of course none of them work so he is in debt to his boss. Sykes now has to pay for protection from the sharks so of course "what Oscar owes Sykes, he owes to the sharks".
Oscar gets a pearl from his best friend Angie and uses it to place a long shot bet which he looses. Sykes has no options, but to have Oscar killed. In the meantime Don Lino (a shark) is trying to get his two sons to take over the family business. The only problem is that Lenny doesn't like to eat fish. Frankie is instructed to teach Lenny how to be a killer when they stumble upon Oscar all tied up. Lenny fakes eating Oscar, only to be found out by Frankie. As Frankie goes to eat Oscar, an anchor drops and kills him. Lenny freaks out and swims off. Of course, the two jelly fish who took Oscar out to kill him find the dead shark and Oscar and assume that Oscar killed the shark. And from there the story goes on.
The story has a great plot and a great moral. Both kids and adults can appreciate the animation and the story line. Originally I thought that this movie was going to be a knock off of Disney's Finding Nemo, but I was completely wrong. The only thing in common they have is that it deals with fish. I really enjoyed watching this movie a second time and found some parts to be more enjoyable. |
