Bernie Mac. This man has never failed to make me laugh. Combine him with baseball, and you've got a movie I just can't miss seeing.
Bernie Mac plays Mr. 3000, whose real name is Stan Ross. He's been given the nickname Mr. 3000 due to the fact that he accumulated 3000 hits during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers, which ended with his sudden retirement in the middle of the 1995 season.
While figuring Mr. 3000's stats one last time before nominating him for the Baseball Hall of Fame, someone in the Hall of Fame back office finds that those 3000 hits were really only 2997. Of course, Mr. 3000 cannot have this and rejoines the ranks of his Milwaukee Brewers in order to get those last three hits.
Being a slightly obsessive baseball fan, I had a few issues with different scenes in the movie. The Brewers, in real life, not only had different uniforms in '95 compared to the ones they wear now, but they also played in a completely different stadium not even remotely close to the Miller Park stadium that's shown over and over in the movie. But I guess I can't expect directors and producers to notice every detail, right?
The DVD has a featurette called "Spring Training: The Extra's Journey", which shows the steps that were taken to find the right extras to play all the different baseball player roles. I really enjoyed this extra part of the movie.
I really liked this movie. I watched it during a flight and it really made the time fly by. I wasn't laughing outloud, but it was a movie I very much enjoyed. |
