Friday Night Lights

When Friday Night Lights first came out I immediately thought that this was going to be the movie that every sports team would go see together. It would be one of those that showed how teamwork is a good thing, overcoming an obstacle and well all that other stuff we see in sports movies that are about high school or college sports.

First off I must give credit to the casting agency for how they cast this movie. Casting Billy Bob Thorton as the head coach was a perfect match. He did a phenomenal job with this role and I was very impressed. All of the high school students were well cast and they played their parts well.

The movie is about high school football in Texas. Now I am not from Texas, but I do know they take certain things very seriously and one of those is high school football. The story is about the new coach that was brought in to the panthers who is getting paid more than the principle of the school. There is a lot of talk about how great he is, and how great one of the players is.

From the beginning we are presented with a couple of sub plots that really make this movie. We have the quarterback who's mom is sick and he has a hard time focusing on the game, we have a running back who's dad won state and is an alcoholic and abusive, we have the star running back who is so sure of himself and many others. All of these little sub plots really make the meat of this movie as the football part only takes up a small part.

Of course the first game comes and they are ahead by a lot and the star player wants to play more. When the coach asks for the third string running back to come in, he can't find his helmet. Now it wasn't shown in the movie that it was hidden from him so the star could continue to play, but I know that is what happened. Of course the star running back goes in and gets injured and is out for the season. Now the team has an uphill battle to get to state.

The ending was not quiet what I expected, and that is all I will say about it. Overall I enjoyed this movie. Was it as good as other sports movies that have a positive story for teams to watch? Not in my opinion. Was it still worth watching? Yes. So if you are wanting to watch a movie based on a real story that is motivational, this is the one for you.
