Finding Neverland

Growing up I always would pretend to go to a far away land. Of course I also always wanted to grow up as quick as possible and these two things seemed to contradict each other. Neverland presented itself as a place for kids to never grow up, but to also do what they wanted: the best of both worlds.

Oscar time came this year (2005) and Finding Neverland had seven nominations this year. I wanted to see this when it came out in the theaters, but it came and went very quickly. It actually was in my city twice as there was a film festival that showed this movie. Of course Finding Neverland was overshadowed by another movie that was written by a guy in the state I live in, at this film festival.

The movie is about Sir James Barrie who is the author of Peter Pan. It starts off with a play of his being shown to all of the upper class citizens and it of course bombs. Dustin Hoffman plays the theater owner and he has one of the best quotes in the entire movie "They made it bad. The critics, they expect more of us," which I thought was great.

So James Barrie is out in the park and he befriends a family. The family has 4 boys and a mother, the father passed away not too long ago. James spends all of his time with the boys, and more specifically a boy named Peter who is afraid to show emotion. As summer goes on, the mother gets sick and hides it from her children. James is inspired by all of the activities the children do and writes a play about it.

I could go into more detail, but I don't want to ruin the movie for you. The acting in this movie was incredible. I know why Jonny Depp was nominated for this movie as he did a fantastic job. The costumes and the integration of "imagined" parts and "real" parts were extremely well done. I loved the entire story and it even had me shedding a tear near the end. I really hope that anyone who wants to find Neverland check out this movie as it was amazing.
