I love John Travolta, The Rock, and Vince Vaughn. I didn't think I could go wrong with this movie. Think is the keyword there.
Granted, I do suffer from a mild case of narcolepsy, but usually at least the nachos can keep me awake during the movie. Not so much with Be Cool. I did fall asleep for a few minutes in the beginning of the movie. However, I don't think I missed much.
Chili Palmer (Travolta) is back. He's left the movie industry that he was involved in originally in Get Shorty, and now he's trying to find a spot in the music business.
Raji (Vaughn) and Sin LaSalle (Cedric the Entertainer) are already secured in the music biz, and they're in the way of Chili Palmer's plans.
Vaughn's character and Andre 3000, in his first major role, kept me me laughing in a movie that would have been a complete wash had it not been for these two roles.
The Rock plays Elliot Wilhelm, a gay bodyguard for Raji, happens to also be an aspiring actor. The concept of The Rock playing such a character is enough to make me laugh, but his role in the movie wasn't as hilarious as it could have potentially been.
A surprise for me was Steven Tyler's role as himself. I loved him! But how can you not love the frontman for Aerosmith?
I was very disappointed with this movie. I went into it hoping to laugh until my sides hurt. With such a talented cast, I was at least hoping to be able to appreciate the acting. That didn't happen at all with this movie.
Granted, it'd been about 10 years since I watched Get Shorty, but with the quality of Be Cool, I still don't think it was worth the price of admission. Perhaps it's worth checking out once it hits video stores, and I don't expect that to take too long. |
