Another day, another remake. Seems to be the popular thing as of late, but sometimes, it just doesn't quite hit the mark. That was the case with Alfie.
Michael Caine played the title role when the movie originally came out in 1966. In the 2004 version, Jude Law takes over the role of a smooth-talking, limosine-driving womanizer who's come from London to the streets of Manhattan, because that's where all the beautiful girls live.
Marisa Tomei, Susan Sarandon, Sienna Miller, and Nia Long all play the parts of women who fall prey to Alfie and his nearly perfected seduction techniques.
Tomei plays a single mom that Alfie considers the closest he has to a girlfriend, but this doesn't stop him from gettin' it on in the limo he drives right before going to see her one evening.
Sarandon takes on the role that she does so well - the older, attractive woman. In this movie, she plays the female version of Alfie - never settling down and making every relationship on her terms.
Long plays Lonette, the girlfriend of Alfie's best friend, Marlon, played by Omar Eppes. The scenes between Alfie and Lonette range from completely hot to almost tear-jerking.
The playboy antics from Alfie were entertaining. He's narrating the movie throughout, and very often talks directly to the camera. That was the main aspect of the movie that I enjoyed.
The end of the movie, for me, was amusing. Without sharing too much of it, the ending could definitely be considered a victory of sorts.
I think movie-goers everywhere have seen enough of the guys waltzing around on the movie screen getting every woman they want any way they want. It's gonna take something pretty special, in my opinion, to make a movie with that premise stand out from the rest. This movie did not stand out at all. |
